Babar Azam to return as Pakistan captain soon

LAHORE - Pakistani cricket star Babar Azam is poised to reclaim the captaincy of the national team as the Pakistan Cricket Board's new management reevaluates its decisions in the current situation.

Azam, widely regarded as one of the finest T20 and ODI players, had stepped down from captaincy across all formats last year citing differences with the management.

With a change in top officials, the PCB is expected to reinstate Babar Azam as the captain of the men's national team. Reports in local media suggest that the talented batsman is hesitant to shoulder the responsibility.

Shaheen Afridi's captaincy in T20Is appears uncertain, with Babar Azam emerging as a probable replacement. Initially, Mohammad Rizwan was considered, but recent developments have favored Babar for the prestigious role.

The Cricket Board officials are anticipated to finalize the decision to appoint Babar as captain in the coming days.

Babar had relinquished his white-ball captaincy after the 2023 World Cup to Shaheen Afridi. Subsequently, he also stepped down from the red-ball captaincy, leading to Shan Masood's appointment. Pakistan's performance suffered under Shaheen's captaincy, notably facing defeats in Australia and New Zealand.

With the recent changes, there's speculation of Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir making a return to the T20I squad, raising questions about their past criticisms of Babar's leadership.
