Meet the Hindu woman who fasts in full spirit every Ramadan!

Fasting, a practice spanning cultures and religions, is renowned for fostering discipline, self-control, and spiritual connection. While closely linked with Islam today, Neelam Gokulsing, a Mauritian expat residing in Dubai, embarked on her fasting journey during Ramadan 2021 in Malaysia, out of solidarity with her Muslim friends.

"I have many Muslim friends in Malaysia, and we used to share suhoor and iftar meals together. For me, it was an expression of solidarity and an opportunity to understand their culture, despite being Hindu," says 26-year-old Neelam, employed at a Fintech company and having relocated to Dubai two years prior.

Continuing her fast in Dubai, Neelam found her initial gesture of solidarity transformed into a voyage of self-discovery. "Fasting involves embracing the spiritual aspect, where individuals cleanse themselves and embrace associated concepts. It's like a collective effort that reveals various values about oneself."

The discipline of fasting amidst daily responsibilities has provided Neelam profound insights into her character. Inspired by the spirit of Ramadan, her future aspirations include learning Arabic to deepen her integration into UAE's culture and society.
